I was attempting today to use an SMI program to reload my points back into the
data collector so that we can pretend to set some points. (This is for class,
and the boundary research was so hairy we're not totally sure it's right.)
The data collector got garbage, apparently because of null bytes in what is
supposed to be a text file. We finally decided to print out a point list and
enter the points to set and the traverse points manually. While the other guy
was doing something, I looked around the SMI program and found that it can
convert units, but only between meters and US feet. Land Desktop knows only
one foot, and I'm not sure which one it is.

The data should always be stored in the same unit, meters in this case,
regardless of what unit is presented to the user. Doing it any other way
invites disaster.
