Writing as a Brit, I suppose that this is a case of “When in Rome …”  (well 
half-way, don’t get into the habit of using customary/colonial/imperial units.
 
As regards the using the word “metre” or “meter”, I prefer using “metre” as a 
measure of distance, whiel a “meter” is a thing that has a needle on it.  A 
metre meter would be a device that measures distance.

I don't know, I actually love the meter spelling rather than metre.  As you 
said, to me it is kind of foreign to see the other spelling.Mike
