I always remind my students to if an SI unit is named after a person (Watt,
Ampere, Faraday) etc, then the corresponding symbol is upper case. Otherwise
it is lower case.  An exception is made for litres - the CGPM have agreed
that either "L" or "l" can be used, the reason being that "l" and "1" aer
easily confused.
