Anyone who teaches that .97 cents can be colloquially taken to mean the same as 97 cents needs to have his or her teaching credential pulled forthwith! This is one of the most aggravating things I see in stores, and when you mention the error the math-class slackers see nothing wrong with it and think you are the stupid one.
