It is interesting that AP considers metric units as abbreviations and not
symbols (too subtle for them?) but does not require periods as it does with
other abbreviations. At least they get one part of 'metric' correct. 
It is interesting that the LA Times did not use periods on metric units before
the Tribune bought the Times but the Times but almost immediately, the Times
switched styles and now requires periods on metric units in violation of the
AP style. Curious.
