These days, I see references to "the elephant in the room" frequently and,
of the two, it's the one I use myself. The "800 pound gorilla" metaphor is
quite rare, by comparison. 
 
Besides, when one refers to an elephant, stating its mass is redundant. That
makes the metaphor much more concise.

Pat, I always thought that the American metaphor involved a gorilla,  not an
elephant, in the room. It is a gorilla of a certain weight. We pick on 800
pounds.  So, there's something like a 400 kg gorilla in the room.
