Recently on this discussion group we have had comments about the Associated Press Stylebook and its less than supportive stance regarding the use of metric in AP stories and reports. Some of us have sent correspondence to the Stylebook's editors or to the AP's directors.

I have become aware through personal correspondence that the USMA officers have taken steps to contact the AP and to try to engage them in discussion regarding the need to review their Stylebook. These contacts have been made through NIST with which USMA has often worked on metric concerns. It is thought that, if the contact is made by NIST, it would be more likely that AP would give it serious consideration.

The above does not preclude any private contacts we might make as individual. In fact, it makes it more likely that our individual contacts might be heeded and just might lend weight to the more formal, although private, discussions that may be conducted.
