Dear Matthew Chapman,
Congratulations on the ScienceDebate2008 initiative. I wish you every
success with your campaign to raise the profile of science and
engineering issues to their rightful place in this year's presidential
debate.
That said, I would like to add another perspective from someone who
looks at these issues from a long way away (Geelong in Australia) and
from another perspective (after Australia's successful metrication
upgrade). To place this into the current political context in the USA,
I formed my views using the seven questions that 'Scientists and
Engineers for America and fifteen other science organizations' have
united to ask the 2008 congressional candidates in preparation for
this year's elections in the USA.
I have now rewritten my letter to the United States Metric Association
(USMA) in the form of an article and placed it on the metrication
matters web site. You can go to http://www.metricationmatters.com/articles
where it is near the top of the page or download the article
directly from: http://www.metricationmatters.com/docs/AMetricationElephant.pdf
Again, I wish you well for your ScienceDebate2008 campaign.
Cheers,
Pat Naughtin
