Wile in the NOAA-NWS 1970s, I tried to get the USDOT to place the road markers
in kilometers and tenths of kilometers (100 meters 110 yards) which could be
referred to by the numbers. Immediately the USDOT began to install the markers
in increments of miles and tenths contrary to the push toward the metric
system. Oh well!

During my New England visit last month, I noticed that Interstate 93 is now
marked off in tenths of a mile. Of course, this makes locating vehicles and
people easier since it is easier to reach a distance marker, e.g., "I'm at 24.8
miles northbound." So, more markers are a good idea, sure. But, if WOMBAT is
supposed to be the predominant system of measurement in the U.S., then why not
flaunt it? Why not mark off miles in fathoms, rods, or furlongs? Hey, furlongs
would make sense on that part of I-93 that goes by the Rockingham Race Track in
Salem, New Hampshire (grin).
