Last week, my hospital pharmacy implemented a new device: an electronic safe for controlled substances (abusable drugs). It is a new way of dispensing these drugs for us, but it simplifies the process tremendously, while at the same time improving the dispensing accuracy. It took perhaps a day's worth of getting-used-to, but already, all of us are singing its praises. Observing this approbation for a change in procedure, I have been taking every opportunity to explain to my co-workers that they will discover the same experience with national metrication: after a period of adjustment, I say to them, they will not want to revert to the old units, and wonder how they ever got along without SI!
