From the author of the superb visitors' guide "South Pacific," in response
to my praise of his exclusive use of the metric system in that book:

Subject: RE: metric system in Moon Handbooks South Pacific

Paul Trusten,

Thanks for your email of June 18, 2008, which was forwarded to me by
Avalon Travel Publishing.

I've used the metric system exclusively in all of my travel guides over
the past 30 years. Here in Canada (where I live), we're officially metric
although some dinosaurs still think in miles and feet. Gallons are seldom
mentioned here as gasoline is sold exclusively by the liter.

I remember when the first edition of Moon Handbooks South Pacific was
published in 1979, my co-author wanted to include the imperial
measurements in brackets after the metric. Luckily, I was able to convince
him that it was a waste of space and it's never been an issue since.

So good luck with your work. It would be wonderful if Americans could be
convinced to give up the archaic imperial system.

Best wishes,

David Stanley
