If they're following A.P. style then meters and yards are equal. Say for example the reporting calls for meters: you're virtually guaranteed to see (yards) immediately following. I don't believe I've ever seen the reverse.

In your story this morning (Wednesday) on the Russians in Georgia, your
correspondent stated the woman told me "I am 2 yards from a Russian
tank". I find this hard to believe as no one outside the US uses yards,
it was more likely meters.
