And in the UK, the WOMBAT formula is BMI = (weight in stones X 50) / (height
in inches)^2. It is made even more complicated in the UK because a weight
in stones and pounds has to be converted to stones and decimals of a stone.

The WOMBAT formula for BMI is

BMI = (weight in pounds X 703) / (height in inches)^2

So, that is how the apologists get around metric. But, as Mr. Mendenhall
suggested for the definition of U.S. measures, the basis is metric, not
WOMBAT. The definition of body mass index is the patient's mass in kilograms
divided by the square of the patient's height in meters.

Paul - the actual report said that she weighed 1000 lbs. This leads on to
the question - how would you obtain a reading fro her BMI (assuming of
course that you knew her height)? Apologists for imperial/customary units
say - look it up on a set of tables, but how many tables go that far. In
metric units of course, you do not need look-up tables. Assuming that she
was average height (165cm), her BMI would be a massive 165! To prove a
point, I converted to metric units and calculated that using paper and
pencil. (A pencil, not a pen!).
