From time to time over the last 30 or so years I have heard of a
'gentlemen's agreement' where the USA would accept the -re in metre as
a quid pro quo for Britain's giving up the -me on kilogramme. I'm
thinking that this would have happened in the 1970s. Does anyone know
anything about such an agreement.
