There is no confusion and no conflict, Brij. Meter is the spelling used in
US English, German, Dutch, and several other languages. Metre is used in
some other languages. Then there are other variants (like metro, metr,
etc.), not to mention those used with other alphabets (e.g., Cyrillic).
 
SI does not prescribe the spelling, just the symbol.
