Pat,

I don't think I'm the only person who does not know this.  I was taught in 
school that the metric system was invented by the French during the French 
revolution.  This is common knowledge.  So it would seem that most of the world 
has lead sheltered lives.  

This issue of who invented it is interesting but is nothing more then trivia.  
What difference would it make now?
