To make matters worse jewelers and those trading in precious metals to the
consumer will often use grams and have scales in grams.  At least the ones I
visited.  They have a price board and will tell you the price in grams they
will buy and sell at.   They have a standard digital laboratory balance that
can weigh small items accurately.

Since the market uses ounces you really don't know unless you have a calculator
with you to do a conversion to see how much of a markup they are charging.  I
really don't care if Wall street wants to trade in ounces of gold, but why
can't they also include the gram price?  It seems they want to do whatever
creates the most confusion.

What's heavier an ounce of gold or an ounce of feathers?

Many people buying gold out there don't realize the ounce of gold is the
heavier because it's a different ounce. If gold were priced by the gram there
would be no confusion.

Just an example of Obfusification.
