Dear USMA Listserver Subscribers, USMA Members, and U.S. metrication advocates,
There may be a way for us to open a door into the Obama Administration at a crucial point. The tool we will use to do this is the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Congress established OSTP in 1976 as a part of the Executive Office of the President, to advise the President on the effects of science and technology on domestic and international affairs. Here are some OSTP points that may be relevant to metrication: a.. Cultivation of a New Generation of Skilled, Educated, Science-savvy Americans: By boosting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education now, we can rest assured that the next generation of Americans will be among the best prepared in the world to face the challenges of the 21st Century, and will pass to their children a stronger, greener and more sustainable economy. a.. Upgrade Education To Meet The Needs Of The 21st Century: Harness new technologies to transform the way teachers teach and students learn. Ensure all public school children are equipped with the necessary science, technology and math skills to compete and win in the 21st century economy. a.. ...it means ensuring that all Americans have the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education they will need to participate in modern society and to be a part of a reinvigorated American economy. OSTP may be the appropriate avenue to find out more about the President's metric policy. Receiving a certain number of general inquiries through the OSTP Web site might raise that agency's awareness of U.S. citizens' interest in metrication issues. On the Internet, see http://www.ostp.gov/. Please read the site carefully, draw your own conclusions, and, if you wish, contact OSTP with your thoughts on metrication, as follows: Due to delays in mail processing, it's best to send all correspondence to OSTP via email or fax General Contact Information: Office of Science and Technology Policy Executive Office of the President 725 17th Street Room 5228 Washington, DC 20502 [email protected] Director's Office Phone: 202.456.7116 Fax: 202.456.6021 Thank you very much for your help, and, as always, for your wisdom and persistence, as we work toward the goal of U.S. metrication.
