As a young man from Boston, I rode over the Harvard Bridge many times, and was
introduced to the smoot scale by my fellow bus riders. Today, I don't think
of the smoot, at all, as unit created by devout isolationists. On the
contrary, I believe that MIT students are devoted to measurement standards, and
would be ardent supporters of U.S. metrication if given the opportunity to join
us in advancing our goal officially. Please consider: creating a measurement
unit based on someone's name is a time-honored practice within the SI (watt,
henry, volt, gray, newton, etc.).
