This weekend, a short threaded plastic rod broke in one of our recently-purchased toilets. I took one of the broken pieces to a large hardware store, to see if I could find a metal bolt of matching size. I succeeded; it's an M8, and the toilet is now repaired (and I bought enough bolts to replace all corresponding parts in both of our new toilets). M8 is, of course, a metric size. Which seems a trifle odd since the toilet was made by American Standard. STATE OF FOOLISH CONSISTENCY
