I disagree.  In my view a mile can be a metric - in fact anything that can
be represented numerically can be a metric.

 

My understanding is that a metric includes by physical and non-physical
measurements.  Miles are certainly metric, but the metric by which we would
judge a batsman could be his batting average or it could be his scoring rate
in runs per hundred balls.

 

The article really needs re-writing to bring this sort of idea out.
