Did you have to? :-) Such a non-issue. Metre, meter, metr, metro, metrem, µetr, 
cgn, .... any is fine. 

I appreciate your definite summary but hope for a demise of this U.S. 
pettiness. SI designated m as the unit of length in every language and culture 
as USMA know.
