it may be that there is no discrete standard for a concept of
'customary'. however in such a sense the term 'customary' can be used
correctly and appropriately. there is also the matter of the name of
'customary' for a group or type of measure, especially in comparison
with metric measures. it is important to be clear on what is the
context of the word.
more importantly however, how are people understanding the terms
'customary' and 'metric'? let's avoid arguing issues of 'customary'
and rather focus discussions on how people can use SI better.
language is customary, language is conventional. remember that SI is
SI, and that pre-metric measures are not SI. also remember that some
of the technical words that are used by experts in formal or
specialized situations, are sometimes used by people in less formal
situations. the term 'unit' is one such example.
