Subject: [USMA:46288] The "Leaning Tower Of Texas"

Attached is a recent article from my home town newspaper, The The Midland
Reporter-Telegram, Midland, Texas, concerning the demolition of a tower on
South Padre Island, Texas. This was not urban renewal. This was the razing of a
new building whose construction had been badly designed. Here was a grand
project kayoed by poor planning. This tower's fate reminds me of the first
attempt at U.S. metrication in the 1970s. Watered down and lacking in
leadership, it was born to fail. We can't let it happen again. Let's build our
tower well the next time, settling for nothing less than a sound, coordinated,
national metrication plan for the Nation. Our metric tower must be built to
stand.
