You need not wave a white flag, but instead, a checkered flag, because we Americans will be winners once we change over to the SI metric system as our everyday standard of measurement. We are on our way already. In 1988, Congress made the metric system American. It declared that metric is the preferred system of measurement for U.S. trade and commerce. Once America goes fully metric, it will also go decimal, just like dollars and cents. No more interpolating three-eighths of an inch---we will handle small distances in millimeters, which are not unfamiliar to us at all.
