It was Arizona's plan to use Federal stimulus money to change the signs to miles. Some people in the towns are protesting. Some protests are about being "unique" with metric, but the majority are businesses who oppose the change in exit numbers because the numbers appear on signs and advertising literature. Some protests are about "wasting" stimulus money instead of using it for something more important.
US freeway exit numbers are based on miles (or kilometers) from either the beginning of the road (in-State) or the south or west state border if the road crosses a border. I-19 is the only example with kilometer exits, that I am aware of. ________________________________ From: Martin Vlietstra <[email protected]> To: U.S. Metric Association <[email protected]> Sent: Tue, February 23, 2010 4:43:03 PM Subject: [USMA:46742] Re: pictures of I 19 signs Is there a likelihood that the State of Arizona will retain the I19 metric signs in order to assert their statehood? ________________________________ From:[email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John M. However, they are due to be replaced as they are faded and don't meet refective standards. The plan is to use miles on the replacement; however, that plan has become controversial. No state has more than "demo" levels of metric signs. However, to the point raised by BWMA, we do NOT have piles of dead bodies lying around them. We Americans can interpret them (or ignore them?) as required. For years, the MUTCD has completely defined the requirements for metric signage, although no State has embraced it and gone completely metric. Unfortunately, they have been removed from the 2009 edition of MUTCD as no one was using the metric. I am sure at some point in the future, it will all have to be "reinvented." ________________________________ From:Stephen Davis <[email protected]> To: U.S. Metric Association <[email protected]> Sent: Tue, February 23, 2010 3:16:18 PM Subject: [USMA:46738] Re: pictures of I 19 signs This is good to see. This part of Arizona is even more metricated than the UK in regard to road signs. Is this a permanent measure? It's time the UK stopped running scared of the anti-EU press and introduced similar signs! ----- Original Message ----- >From:Parker Willey Jr. >To:U.S. Metric Association >Sent:Tuesday, February 23, 2010 6:13 AM >Subject:[USMA:46729] pictures of I 19 signs > >Hi: >I was electronically driving down Arizona I-19 using my mouse (Google) and >caught these pics of a couple of the metric signs. > >I wonder if we can somehow get the rest of the states and the rest of AZ to >put up metric signs.
