What operating system? What desktop environment? I tried that, using the left
Alt key and the left shift key, and got a huge list of the files in my home
directory. I typed it into jbopy, a Python program; typing it into my mail
window has no effect.

In KDE the way I type a degree symbol is to hold the right-Alt key (which is
the compose key) down and hit 'o' twice. 7 °C. This of course requires
setting something to be the compose key.
