Thank you, Pat. And I re-read your letter, which states the case for metric
very eloquently.

Unfortunately, while every other country outside the USA has adopted the metric
system (with variations), we have a cautionary tale of how we in the USA could
get things wrong in the forum discussion currently engaged in on the topic of
the metric muddle in Britain:

Let's hope that, when we in the States finally take the plunge, we follow the
fine example that Australia affords us.

Well done Ezra,

Good letter – let's hope you get a positive response.

You might recall an article I wrote on a similar theme before the last
elections in the USA. See

I got an email from UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists) and was surprised to
see in their solicitation for membership a story about an endangered species
that used only Imperial/USC.

I wrote them following letter (after joining), so we'll see what kind of
response I get.

==============

Dear UCS:

Thank you so much for the fine work you are doing. It is desperately needed in
these troubled and turbulent times.

I have just joined your organization and am very proud to have done so. I hope
and pray that your efforts will bear fruit in time to save the planet.

Because you are scientists who hold yourselves to the highest standards, I was
surprised to see in the email I received soliciting membership that you gave
facts about the danger to the pika only in obsolete Imperial/US Customary units
(in this case, a temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit).

I think it is appropriate both from a scientific as well as a global
perspective that all units of measure be given in the universal standard,
namely the SI (aka metric).

If you decide it is also appropriate to add Imperial/USC units in parentheses
afterwards, I certainly can understand that given your outreach efforts.
However, the primary indication of units should always be given following the
universal and scientific standard, which is the SI.

Thank you again for all your fine and indispensable work to improve humanity's
lot on this shared Earth of ours.

Cheers,
