Dear All,
I found this about three paragraphs down at:
http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/lets-go-metric-but-how-205498/index5.html
Well, first thing, the US has been using the French Metric system
since 1795, when they established Springfield Armoury (Armory) to
manufacture the Model 1795 Musket, patterned on the French Charleville
Musket ( 1762 and further improvements) with the measurement system
set down by the "Committee of Public Safety"(Paris) decree of 1791,
regarding Gun manufacture in France, which adopted the metric system
of measurement for Gunmaking in France. ( and the metric system in
general commerce as well)
Cheers,
