We on this list have been working toward the the goal of U.S. metrication, and,
as we are aware, the silence can be deafening, suggesting strong resistance to
the change. But, look at what is happening to U.S. coinage, particularly the
quarter dollar! From 1932 to about 1999, America's 25-cent piece seemed to be
immutable: that ole' bust of George Washington on the obverse and that familiar
heraldic eagle on the reverse (that coin was the tooth-fairy coin of my
childhood) . But, starting in 1999, the U.S. Mint exploded with new design
presentations with its 50-state quarter program (actually 56-jurisdiction if we
include DC and the five territories). Next on tap from the Mint is the "America
The Beautiful" quarter series. A national park or other national site will be
depicted on each coin. We are thnking "change" in America, and I hope that the
spirit will go on to include the change to the SI metric measurement standard.
