It's sad that the origin of the metric is an issue at all.

I'm no historian but there must be many things that we take for granted in 
everyday life which were invented/conceived in Europe or elsewhere. What sort 
of world do these people think we are living in?

It would appear that few people from the Uk who responded to this article are 
aware that the metric system was invented in London so they are complaining 
about a 'foreign' English metric system – how odd. See
