In KDE, enable the keyboard layout tool, then configure it. In the Xkb options 
tab, set the compose key position to something (I have it set to the right 
Alt key). To type the exponent, hit the compose key, then the caret, then the 
digit. cm³.

If you're using Gnome, there should be something similar. In a window manager 
without such a tool, run the command "setxkbmap -option compose:ralt" (which 
shows at the bottom of the Xkb options tab).
