A while ago someone here mentioned noticing a National Geographic article on the web using metric. It looks like I have some more good news in that direction. My kids have started getting an NG "Explorer" magazine which is not only using metric, but uses it first with imperial in parentheses. Although often it's obvious the original source is imperial, the conversions are clean, much like in Time magazine. This magazine seems to be directed at English-speaking audiences of the Pacific Rim, including Australia and New Zealand. However, the unit spellings are US English.
By pure coincidence I also visited a bookstore today, where I looked at a couple of NG books. Amazingly enough, both used metric. One about space used metric first, while the one about animal migrations, used metric in parentheses. So, have we had a change of management at NG, or are they finally facing the reality that English speakers outside the States not only speak metric, they prefer it?
