Dear Bill,

Thanks for your kind thoughts. It is indeed a disaster that will take months,
even years, for the good folk in Queensland to get over. But they are a robust
lot who know how to work together with the support of their neighbours. The
other states send specialist rescue teams, the New Zealanders send a highly
trained disaster recovery team, the Indonesians and the Papua-Niu Ginians send
money for the Queensland Premiers Relief Fund, and our good friends in Sri
Lanka send enough tea for everyone in the rescue teams to enjoy a "nice hot
cuppa" between their shifts.

Fortunately, for us in Geelong, we are only on the tail end of this rain
system. We will probably get about 150 millimetres of rain today and this will
produce some minor flooding and some flash floods but not in the same order as
Queensland. Interestingly, these floods have arrived at the end of 12 years of
drought. We live in interesting times.

To add a metrication note; all predictions of flood water levels are given in
metres to a single decimal place. For instance the Brisbane peak was predicted
to be 8.5 metres. Later this was downgraded to 8.4 metres and the final figure
is measured and reported with two decimal places as in this case 8.26 metres.
As one of the Bureau of Meteorology experts said, "Don't forget that with
floods every millimetre counts!"

Cheers,
