I support Jim's view on this.

As examples, consider the numbers you get when you scan a 35 millimetre film 
slide.

*       100 pixels per millimetre is adequate to resolve approximately 50 lines 
per millimetre.

*       150 pixels per millimetre is adequate to resolve approximately 80 lines 
per millimetre.

This site is quite specifically technical for its subject but it shows a 
practical application of 'pixels per millimetre' and a detailed explanation of 
'lines per millimetre' http://www.indieshd.com/2010/02/16/what-is-mtf 

It looks like, for photographic work, values in pixels per millimetre could be 
used as whole numbers without decimals and without fractions.
