Hi Pat,

One of the aims of the metric system is to com pare like with like. In that
respect, the UK is ahead of Oz. However I do acknowledge that billing per
MJ is preferable to billing per kWh.

Regards

Martin

Dear Martin,

With respect, I have to object to your use of the word "ahead" when the use
of the unit, kWh, does so much to confuse the public about the difference
between energy and power. See
http://metricationmatters.com/docs/EnergyPowerDistanceSpeed.pdf

At least the UK is ahead of Australia in one respect - all gas and
electricty bills are in the unit of measure, even if it is kWh.

Does Australia require (or allow) gas and electric bills to billed in
joules? If it is an allowable option, does any gas or electric company do
it?

Dear John,

My electricity bill measures the energy I buy in kilowatt-hours. I believe
that this is the common practice all over Australia.

My gas bill measures the energy I but in joules. Again, I believe that this
is the common practice all over Australia. One company, chosen at random,
has a glossary that lists the way it uses joules. Go to
http://www.originenergy.com.au/605/Glossary and search for joule.
