Paul, The Ni-Metal Hydride battery in my 2000 Honda Insight refused to accept a full charge in its eleventh year early this spring. (The warranty was for ten years.) The Insight does run on its three cylinder gasoline engine without electrical torque assist and stroke smoothing, but the ride is rough.
Rather than replace the Insight, I decided to replace the battery pack. I expect to continue getting about 25 km/L (i.e. 4 L/100 km). My Insight is in the Honda shop this very day, April 14. The battery replacement quotation is $2200, but that is much less than the $19 000 for the Honda Hybrid CRZ sitting at my dealer's franchise. The Chevy Volt is not yet available in Illinois.
