My response: The purpose of study assignments after school is to train students to do their own academic research beyond the classroom, i.e.., lower grades teach students HOW TO LEARN. If, after being set the example of having no responsibility to their studies after class, they decide to pursue a college education, going into it they will feel that individual study is not required of them. If this new rule comes to pass in this New Jersey school district, it may set yet another pattern of mediocrity for the Nation. We will be setting ourselves on one more path to ignorance, which our country cannot afford. What else is new in America? Every moral and social strength we once had is being torn down. We are producing generations of what H.G. Wells, in "The Time Machine," called Eloi, the childlike people who lived above ground. The fate of the Elois is too grisly to state here. You need"do some homework" to find out what happened to the Eloi.
