The EU did "force" Australia and New Zealand to go metric. When the UK joined the EU (or the EEC as it was then), Australia and New Zealand lost their preferential markets in the UK and went metric to improve their trade links in Asia.

How stupid can one be? Many Imperial units are of medieval French and Italian origin, and the Fahrenheit scale was developed by a German scientist. On the other hand the SI unit for thermodynamic temperature which also defines the Celsius scale was developed by a pro-metric Scottish scientist, Lord Kelvin! Last, but not least, the EU supported Imperial and USC units when it cancelled the directive on measuring units.
