I don't know.  Plastic rulers never seem to have the metal strip; I guess they 
are "equal opportunity" rulers.

Subject: [USMA:50812] metal guide on rulers sold in U.S.

I have been on this particular  watch for more than 30 years now: the metal 
guide on some dual-scale (millimeter-inch)  rulers sold in the U.S. has almost 
always been placed on the inch scale, thus biasing the user away from metric as 
the preferred measurement system. This morning, I am in a local Walgreens, and 
now I see that wooden ruler being sold without any metal guide at all.  This 
might have been just a cost-saving decision, but it did remove the old built-in 
bias against metric. Is this a trend?
