Nor only would they have measured by the kilometre, but they would be in
breach of EU law if they tried to measure by the mile.  Under EU law, only
those countries that were using miles in 1973 may continue to use them.
Those countries are the UK, Republic of Ireland, Malta and Cyprus.  Only the
UK avails itself of this dispensation.
