I intended no offense to any political party (at least not here!). The
trouble is that as with any serious problem that requires what the
talking heads call "political will", and especially in an election year,
there is /no/ political will that may cause a politician's support to
waver. So no one does anything to really rock the boat. Sure, in
private xxx legislators may agree that it really would be a good idea
(well, a /nice idea/) if the US adopted the metric system, and that if
we are to have such a system in yy years we should do something
now...but /they/ are not about to do anything personally about it
because it would be rocking the boat.
So we sit and sit, Democrats and Republicans. We could fix many
problems with, say, social security, Medicare, health coverage, and
cumbersome measurement if we took easy steps today. But we don't. I
have always said that if the federal government simply required all milk
sold in military PXs to be in 2 L containers, the dairy industry would
quickly make the same containers available all over the country (the
same ones they use in Canada).
I personally don't think we are ever going to get there until the
federal government really makes a stand, and I am not holding my breath.
