HARRY WYETH
As a general rule, a brisk walk on a flat surface covers 100 m in one
minute. That is 1.66 m/sec. I can do my feeble version of racewalking
at 8 minutes/km, or a little faster, or 125 m/min or 2.08 m/sec.
Competitive racewakers go much, much faster, of course. On a few
occasions (not recently!) I have passed amateur-class racewalkers in
marathons who were still maintaining a pace that would bring them in at
3:45 or so, or 42.2 km in 225 minutes, or 187 m/minute.
