It never was a problem (grin). Down here in the Texas Republic, you can ski in one part and go sunning in another on the same day. As we say when we travel, "The sun is rize, the sun is set, and we ain't outta Texas yet!"
USMA's Public Relations office is located in Midland, Texas, which is a memorable illustration of metric distances. Midland is so-named because it is midway between El Paso and Fort Worth. It is 500 km equidistant from each of those cities. I wish I could say that we chose this location by design, but it really is an SI public relations dream to live here. The tornado threat occurred in Fort Worth, and while it was going on, there wasn't a cloud in the Midland sky, and we enjoyed temperatures in the delightful upper 20s. But, we are the Saudi Arabia of wind, and, as usual, it was blowing around 50 km/h. Wind generators abound in West Texas, as anyone flying over the region can see. So, if you need a good U.S. land reference for 1000 km, it is the distance between Fort Worth and El Paso, Texas. with Midland, and USMA, bisecting the line. Paul R.
