When the founders of the metric system thought about sizing the unit of mass, they decided to fix it on the quantity of water filling a certain metric volume. They selected the volume of 1 cm3; the mass of water it contained became the gram, symbol g.
So it happens that 1 m3 contains 1 Mg of water, 1 dm3 contains 1 kg, 1 cm3 contains 1 g, and so on. This relationship between the volume and mass of water is a handy and convenient feature, most useful in both daily life and engineering. The size represented by the symbol Mg is also called the "metric ton" in this country, and "tonne" in several other English speaking countries. Because the word "ton" has several different meanings and spellings worldwide, its use is discouraged. In technical writing, the SI symbol must always be used. Stan J.
