2012-07-04 Greetings from the U.S. Metric Association (USMA) to our metrication advocates at home and to others around the world interested in the goal.
USMA (www.metric.org ) is a non-profit, national organization founded in 1916 and committed to the goal of U.S. conversion to the SI standard in most of the country's measurement matters. Our organization's Web site continues to be listed as a "useful link" by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (the BIPM, or the International Bureau of Weights and Measures). We are working to achieve independence from our country's pre-metric measurement units. In 1776, during the deliberations over declaring the American colonies' separation from Britain, the diplomat Benjamin Franklin reportedly stated that there can be no independence without unanimity. In like manner, there can be no true U.S. metrication without the adoption of the SI for all practical measurements in U.S. society. This transition cannot succeed merely by changing a few signs. It must affect all, or it will benefit few. Such a change requires a national compact of government, industry, the media, and academia. USMA shall continue to work for such a plan of American independence for tbe SI, the measurement standard designed, as the Marquis de Condorcet observed, "for all people, for all time." SIncerely, Paul R. Trusten Registered Pharmacist Vice President and Public Relations Director U.S. Metric Association, Inc. www.metric.org [email protected] +1(432)528-7724
