Watched some trials for next year's America's Cup today.  Board speeds are all
in knots, but relative positions on the course, distances (towards mark)
between boats all in meters.

Speed of course is absolute speed, but distance is based on distance made good
(directly upwind or downwind) distance across the course is ignored.

NBC announcers stuck to metric for all relative position comments.

At each end of course, all boats must sail through a "gate" of two committee
boats, encircle either and race back to the other end.  Seven legs, last leg
heads in toward shore on a broad reach to finish line.
