This part of my letter to California Governor, Jerry Brown:
The purpose of this is beyond educational. We, as teachers train our students in two different systems of measurements: - The customary inherited from the imperial system. - The SI (International System), or also called metric. Our students are confused. They suffer as they learn fractions at an early stage in order to use the customary system. This is turning many young generations away from math too soon; whereas the decimal system is so simple to use. Our state is a hub for trade with the world that is already metric. Throughout our ports, we welcome millions of tourists and business people who find themselves in a different world of measurements. Our industry is already mostly metric for a smoother world trade as well as all the other advantages of simplicity of use. I would like to refer you to www.metric.org for more details. As a leader of this state I urge you to spearhead the nation and lead California in its metric journey while avoiding the mistakes of the past that stalled this great nation to join the international metric community. We can also learn from Great Britain's mistakes that are expressed in a book posted at: <http://ukma.org.uk/avbm-summary> http://ukma.org.uk/avbm-summary I wish you to succeed in this endeavour. You will be supported by the US metric organizations as well as the scientists. Sincerely, John Altounji Adjunct Assistant Professor Los Angeles Valley College
