Even though Hawaii is distant from the mainland States, I'm still glad to see
them do it. However, I think that 2018 is too far down the road (pun
intended). 2015 or 2016 would be a better target date.

Sadly I doubt it will have any effect at all. If it passes, a good thing,
Hawaii is so isolated from the mainland and so unique in its demographics and
culture that it wouldn’t really matter. There is quite a bit of mixed use and
probably more use of SI than most states in Puerto Rico (and I’d venture to
guess Guam) but it has no impact on US metrication. The proximity of Canada and
Mexico certainly has had no effect.

The Hawaii bill HB36, if it is approved could cause a domino effect on other
states due to the need for uniformity. I'm sorry if this is a duplicate email.
I meant to send the last one to everybody.

So, the states still have the option of putting up metric-only road signs for
speed limits and distances? Sure hope so!

This is a metrication bill, signs and gas included(grin). But, yes, a statement
on the 1988 act should be added to the bill. Thanks, Phil.

It would be nice if the bill made mention of the fact that Congress has already
declared SI to be the preferred system of measurement for the U.S. Also, it
would be nice if there was a mention of highway signs and gasoline sales.
