In the UK, busses are free to “senior citizens” in many cases. In England,
for example, buses (but NOT coaches) are free to within England to English
residents after 10:00. I believe that similar concessions apply to
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

(In the UK, we differentiate between buses and coaches – buses offer local
services, but coaches offer long-haul services).

They probably have more public mass transit than we do as well. I rode the
bus in Madison, Wisconsin, today and it only cost me $1.00 because I am
"senior".

How many cities in the US have that deal?

£1.35 is about $2.06 right now. They’re paying about twice what we do.

On the other hand, they have a system where no one has to pay to go to the
doctor or the hospital.

Fair trade.

Yup, and the higher value of the British pound makes the differential even
worse.

Mr. DeHaan,

U.S. changeover to the metric system of measurement right now would soothe
the sore eyes of motorists purchasing gasoline. A national average price of
$3.79 per gallon translates into $1.00 per liter.
